5 Tips for Starting an Ecommerce Business

What Is the Difference Between Shopify & Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus is an eCommerce platform specifically designed with high volume, enterprise-level eCommerce brands. Its focus centres around taking what more basic eCommerce systems do and adding:

  • More customisation and control.
  • Greater automation capabilities.
  • Improved multichannel and omnichannel functions.
  • Faster speeds.
  • The ability to reliably handle vast amounts of sales.
  • International intergration

This is not to say that standard Shopify cannot do what needs to be done to run an eCommerce store; Shopify Plus adds that additional level of in-depth expertise that larger brands expect and need.

Shopify says that “You don’t need a thousand days to install software, an army of developers to support it, or millions of dollars to run it.” which is true of the entire platform. Unlike some of its main rivals, such as Magneto, which is complex, expensive and nearly always needs an army of web developers in tow to keep it maintained and running, Shopify plus has the tools and the know-how to allow you to scale with ease.

How Much Does Shopify Plus Cost?

Upfront costs can range vastly depending on what is needed and the number of products you are selling. Monthly licencing fees start at $2000 per month and increases incrementally based on monthly sales volume. The transaction fees 1.6% + $0.35/£0.20 per transaction if using Shopify Payments. There’s also a 0.15% fee if using a third-party processor such as Stripe or PayPal.

For the small business owners among you thinking Shopify is expensive, it is important to remember Shopify Plus is designed for the larger businesses, turning over at least £40k per month in sales.

When You Should Think About Using Shopify Plus

If you are thinking about expanding globally, turning over at least £40-50k in sales per month, and your growth as a business is continuing to increase, and you see no signs of it slowing, or decreasing then Shopify Plus could be for you. Anything below £40-50k a month in sales and you are unlikely to benefit from the additional features, and standard Shopify is probably the route for you.
