What are the Different Types of Websites & How Can They Benefit Your Business
With over 80% of business engagement happening online and this number only set to increase it is more important than ever to have a strong online presence that works for your business. If you have been thinking about investing in a website but are not sure where to start or do not know what type of website you might need then this is the blog for you! We are going to outline the most common types of websites and their uses so that you will know what type of website you need in order for your business to succeed online.
Getting Started
Before you hire a web designer to get your project off the ground you need to decide what you want your website to do – as in what is its purpose? It is important to get this sorted right at the start so that your website designer can factor in anything you might have planned for the future, for instance, if you just plan to have a landing page that tells people where to find you now, but then plan to sell products online within a few months it would be important to factor this in from the start both from a technical and cost perspective.
Firstly ask yourself: What’s the website there for? What do you want it to achieve? What Is the end goal?
Secondly ask yourself: Is there any changes coming up in the short term that might affect the kind of website I might need.
The 4 Most Common Types Of Websites & Their Uses
There are 4 main types of website categories being:
- eCommerce website
- Booking website
- Portfolio website
- Brochure website
Each will offer slightly different functions and capabilities for your needs from lead generation to online eCommerce sales of products or services. Almost all the website categories will be able to handle the basic functions such as providing contact information, social media integration and blogs etc but each then has separate functions required for the type of site the business needs.
Ecommerce Website
Ecommerce websites will allow you to sell products/services online and handle the order process fully online from the display of products to taking order payments and capturing customer details. Ecommerce is just an industry term for an online shop, and any business that is looking to sell their products to a wider audience should consider an eCommerce website.
Booking Website
Booking websites are good for any type of business that relies on bookings – from hairdressers and restaurants right up to hotels and holiday cottages. Booking websites are able to present available slots or rooms to your customers and allow them to book them online, handling everything from availability, payments and booking extras if needed.
Portfolio Website
Portfolio websites are usually used by creative business owners or any business that is looking to show off their work. This can be anything from graphics work or case studies relating to the work that the business does in order to be able to attract new customers.
Brochure Website
Brochure websites is a term used to describe a basic website, one that does not need to be able to handle online payments, take bookings or handle any type of eCommerce. They are used by businesses of all sizes in order to have an online presence for customers who are searching for the products or services they are offering.
They are the main 4 types of websites that website designers tend to make, there are of course lots of different types and some designers will call them different names or refer to them slightly different but the core functions as a rule tend to fit into the 4 categories above.
