How to Select the Best Font for Your Website

Our Guide To Website Fonts

There are a million and one things to think about when building a website, and it’s often the little details that slip your mind. Like with most things, the tiny details can make significant impacts! Fonts are probably one of the most impactful elements of your website design, yet often the last thing to cross your mind! The fonts you use on your website should be an extension of your branding and can communicate more about your brand than words alone.

With the choice of font being a critical part of your website – how do you choose the best one? We will use this blog to help you choose the right font for your website and everything you need to consider.

How to Select the Best Font for Your Website

How to Choose the Best Fonts for Your Website

A very conservative figure to the number of fonts to choose from would be around 500,000! That is a vast number to choose from, but you can quickly whittle that down as not all fonts are practical for websites. To be suitable to use, they must be:

  • Easily read on a multitude of devices and sizes.
  • Be accessible to everyone.
  • Compliment your brand and message.

Things such as readability and how the font portrays your business need to be considered. You do not want to exclude people from doing business with you just because you like a font! Would everyone, including those with reading conditions such as dyslexia or requiring glasses, find it easy to read? The chances are that probably close to 80% of fonts will not be suitable for your website for one reason or another, and that is fine as 20% of 500,000 is still 10,000 fonts!

Once you have narrowed it down to some practical options, you need to consider how the font will fit in with your overall branding and design.

Font Size: Is the font you have chosen going to fit in with the text and content on your website while keeping it in line with the design? Does it fit well on different sizes of devices? You want to find the balance between your text is large enough to read without zooming or pinch zooms on mobile devices – but also not too large that it makes blocks of texts hard to read.

Font Pairings: Word of warning – font pairing can make your overall feel of your website and how it looks better – but using too many can make it worse! We would advise you to use a maximum of 2 fonts on your website, with one used for headings and navigation and one for the base texts.
